Passenger cites low oil pressure before crash

December 7, 2011, 06:18 pm

Last month, a small plane crashed in Haralson County, Georgia, after pilot Kim Woliver told the Federal Aviation Administration that the plane was in a state of emergency and attempted to make a crash landing in an open field. The Cessna 177 crashed in Tallapoosa, killing the pilot and his wife Patricia, and injuring their son Alex, who then died in the hospital due to complications from the crash.

The Times-Georgian reported the National Transportation Safety Board is examining the wreckage, but discovered the pilot had reported low oil pressure just before the crash occurred. On his way to Grady Memorial Hospital after being rescued, Alex told fire crews that the plane lost power before it crashed.

Witnesses said the plane made a sharp turn in the air as it tried to land in the open field, but collided with a tree on its way down and caught fire. Alex was the only passenger to survive the crash, and was found walking around outside the plane with severe burns when rescue crews arrived, the source reported.

The Walton Sun reported the investigation of the crash could take a year to conclude, as more information is needed to discover the cause of the crash. Pilot insurance can protect against system malfunctions that can happen to both experienced or novice pilots.
