The Tampa International Airport in Florida is planning some major renovations to be completed by August, just in time to greet attendees of the 2012 Republican National Convention being held nearby. The improvements to the facility are part of a long-term plan to increase traffic and boost the local economy.
In cooperation with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the project will include enhanced security systems to handle the large volume of visitors anticipated to fly in for the convention. The $20 million project will upgrade several features of the airport, including the restrooms in the main terminal, as well as create a waiting area for members of the military and new signs for the baggage claim sector, the Tampa Bay Business Journal reported.
Airspace over some of Tampa will be closed during the convention, while other restrictions may be placed on flights throughout the event to accommodate the influx of guests. Commercial flights to Tampa International and St. Petersburg-Clearwater International airports will be unaffected. The RNC organizers are expecting 50,000 visitors to fly into the region via airline, charter and generation aviation flights, the Tampa Tribune reported.
Tampa International Airport President Ed Cooley said the facility is working with state and federal officials to make sure the arrivals and departures during the convention go off smoothly, the source reported.
To make sure everyday flights go off without a hitch, pilots should invest in pilot insurance to safeguard assets from the unexpected.
