Costs are often cited as a reason why people don't become involved fly. Scholarships, however, can help fund one's educational pursuits.
The Beverly Flight Center and the North Shore Community College in Massachusetts have established a scholarship fund in the name of a former instructor, Michael Costales.
NSCC director of aviaton John Bosco says the late instructor's memory will be carried on through the scholarship fund.
"The accident was an incredible tragedy which greatly affected many," said Bosco. "I think the establishment of this scholarship fund will offer the many of us who knew and worked with Michael to acknowledge his contributions and ensure his passion for teaching people to fly continues."
Costales' tragic death highlights the importance of life insurance for pilots. Even a knowledgeable instructor can have an accident with devastating effects. Costales worked at the flight center for more than a decade and made a notable impact on his colleagues and students.
Costles was involved in a fatal accident in which he was hit by a propeller on Beverly Airport's runway.
