Stafford Regional Airport wants new terminal; Marshall gets hangar funding

June 8, 2012, 02:38 pm

The Stafford Regional Airport Authority in Virginia is moving forward with plans to get a new terminal. The Stafford County Board of Supervisors permitted the airport to go ahead with the process, and officials will now seek bids through advertisements.

The next step, once the airport has received a bid and draw up figures, is to apply for a grant from the Virginia Department of Aviation. The airport currently supports 20,000 operations a year, according to Manager Ed Wallis. With the expansion, it hopes to more than triple that number, with 70,000 operations each year.

Several West Virginia airports will be splitting $795,000 in federal funds to upgrade facilities. Marshall County Airport will get the bulk of that funding. The airport only has one group hangar for its airplanes and will use the $495,000 its receiving to build 10 new T-hangars, with the capacity to each hold one plane.

Marshall County Airport officials said this funding is much needed and has been a long time coming. The airport applied for the money more than three years ago and officials are excited that the new facility will stimulate the local economy.
