The Federal Aviation Administration authorization bill continues its struggles

The U.S. Senate has extended its session this week, but it does not seem as though the FAA reauthorization bill will be completed as a result. The 20th short-term extension is set to expire on July 22 and there is not a resolution in sight, according to General Aviation News.
As the economy continues to struggle, general aviation airports are experiencing a significant decrease in financial support, often having difficulty raising the 5 percent local matching funds which are required to take part in the FAA's Airport Improvement Program.
What may be seen as worse news is that the House recently voted to raise that cost share to 10 percent, possibly making participation more difficult. The General Aviation Airport Coalition feels that general aviation airports should not be held in violation of federal grant assurances due to a pre-existing through-the-fence agreement.
Additionally, the GAAC feels that GA airports should be more involved in the development of the Next Generation Air Transportation System, possibly reducing the number of pilots life insurance claims.
