US officials promise to search for Earhart

March 30, 2012, 07:49 am

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently announced the United States will help solve the 75-year-old mystery of aviation surrounding legendary pilot Amelia Earhart, after analysis of a photograph suggested she might have crashed on a remote island in the Pacific Ocean.

In 1937, Earhart took off from Papua New Guinea on an expedition to circumnavigate the globe along the equator, the longest route. Along with her navigator, Fred Noonan, Earhart disappeared after taking off. In the midst of the Great Depression, the United States launched a massive search effort to find her, but were unable locate Earhart's body.

"Amelia Earhart may have been an unlikely heroine for a nation down on its luck, but she embodied the spirit of an America coming of age and increasingly confident, ready to lead in a quite uncertain and dangerous world. She gave people hope and she inspired them to dream bigger and bolder," Clinton said. "When she took off on that historic journey, she carried the aspirations of our entire country with her."

One starting point to launch the investigation is the region near Nikumaroro. Tessie Lambourne, Kiribati's foreign secretary, met with Clinton, expressing the country's desire to not only locate the plane's wreckage but also create awareness of the remote nation as a tourist destination. The country will cooperate with the United States on the project.

Pilot insurance is a safe way to protect from unexpected accidents, similar to what Earhart likely experienced.
