Friday Harbor Airport in Washington will begin construction to the airport taxiway. The project is being funded by $3.3 million in federal grants from the Federal Aviation Administration and is set to be completed in late July..
The first phase of the project is to demolish the existing Taxiway A in order to move a new runway six feet west to accommodate larger planes with wider wing spans. The airport, at Port of Friday Harbor on the San Juan Islands, will also install additional safety features including LED lights and an improved storm drainage system.
The federal grants will cover 90 percent of the cost of the project. The port is expected to raise the other 10 percent for the project from a state Department of Transportation grant.
The Tri-Cities Airport in Washington is also receiving improvements to deal with the increased amount of flights and airlines. The expansion will increase the number of Transportation Security Administration lines and staff and will also feature a larger waiting area, which looks to nearly double in size. Pilots meeting the high demand for flights at both these small Washington airports should consider pilot life insurance as a way to remain financially secure, no matter the circumstance.
