Winglet on 737 MAX saves more fuel than anticipated

Boeing has designed a new winglet for its upcoming 737 MAX, which it says will get better gas mileage than originally anticipated.
Boeing says it can save 10 to 12 percent more fuel just by putting the MAX engines into its 737 and adds another 1.5 percent in savings on average with the winglet, but on longer-distance trips the winglet alone accounts for a 5.5 percent fuel savings. The per-seat cost is estimated to be 7 percent better than competitors, based on the fuel saved.
"It's like you're pre-ordering a car, and then they announce that the car is going to be even better," said Alex Hamilton, an aerospace analyst and managing director of EarlyBirdCapital. "It would certainly whet your whistle a little more."
Not only is the fuel efficiency saving Boeing and its customers money, but the carbon footprint on the environment will be reduced with the 737 MAX and will account for a 40 percent smaller noise footprint than single-aisle airplanes in the market today. The 737 MAC won't be available for commercial use until 2017.
