Women are taking to the skies more than ever

May 24, 2011, 02:06 pm

As the number of male pilots dwindles, women are increasingly choosing to join the ranks of the world’s flight crews, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The number of female pilots grew 18.6 percent over the last 11 years, which could mean an increasing number of women are shopping for pilot life insurance policies.

"There was bias for a while, even here. You'd run into issues with instructors categorizing women as too emotional to be good pilots, whereas men were seen as being analytical. But there's a new mentality," Monica Michna, general manager of the Allegheny County Airport, told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Last year, women held 42,218 of the nation’s 627,588 pilot certificates, according to the FAA. A growing number of women also held aviation-related positions such as ground instruction and dispatchers. The number of female flight instructors increased by more than 6.5 percent over the last decade and the number of female aviation mechanics rose 43 percent.

Experts do not believe that women will ever dominate the profession, but are pleased with the growth they have seen over the years, according to the newspaper.
