Sitting in the cockpit and going down the runway for the first time for a pilot is a memorable experience. Learning the proper flying techniques at an early age can help pave the road for a safe lifelong hobby or career.
This weekend, a group of children between the ages of 8 and 17 in Superior, Wisconsin, will have the opportunity to soar above the clouds as part of the Young Eagles program.
The Experimental Aviation Association started the program in 1992, reports the Superior Telegram newspaper, with the lofty goal of providing a ride to one million children by the following December.
EAA chapter 272 member Al White told the paper that he knows at least one youngster was inspired to pursue aviation as a career.
"I gave a Young Eagle Flight to a 13-year-old, and he is now in his second year at the Naval Academy, hoping to become a Naval aviator," White told the paper.
Those interested in pursuing a career in aviation or just getting a pilot's license, can start off by checking in with their local airport or aviation organization.
