In Alaska, Senators Lisa Murkowski and Mark Begich have co-sponsored the Pilot's Bill of Rights in order to allow for certain legal protections for pilots facing Federal Aviation Administration enforcement action, according to the Alaska Dispatch.
The bill will require that the FAA provide a pilot involved in potential action with all relevant evidence 30 days prior to a decision regarding taking enforcement, which is not currently done. Supporters feel that this leaves the pilot at an extreme disadvantage.
"This bill addresses several inequalities that hamper the ability of aviators to even obtain the necessary information to defend themselves," said Rod Hightower, president of the Experimental Aircraft Association.
U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe, a Republican from Oklahoma, introduced the bill in order to help pilots who are having difficulty in dealing with the FAA. Aiding pilots in these situations may encourage more individuals to take up flying and purchase pilots life insurance policies.
In Alaska, general aviation is vital to the community because it enables goods and supplies to reach areas that vehicles may not be able to travel to. These senators feel that supporting those pilots is crucial to their state's economy.
