AOPA releases FlyQ Electronic Flight Bag

November 19, 2012, 05:18 pm

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association recently released the latest addition to its popular FlyQ application for electronic devices. The FlyQ Electronic Flight Bag for the iPad comes with pre- and in-flight planning tools including airport directory information, aviation weather and flight planning.

The application is free for AOPA members, providing digital flight planning products, as well as safety quizzes and information on the AOPA's general aviation happenings. The AOPA developed the app in partnership with Seattle Avionics and provides AOPA Airport directory information with details on more than 5,300 public-use facilities, 7,000 fixed-based operations and aviation-related businesses, and more than 55,000 restaurants, attractions and transportation services. In addition, pilots are able to obtain local, regional and national weather information with surface observations, radar and forecasts, as well as an optimal flight path for the pilot.

Additional features of the FlyQ Electronic Flight Bag include geo-referenced moving maps, runway diagrams and approach plates. It also features a split screen view, 3D Synthetic Vision, Highway in the Sky display, Levil AHRS connection and smart auto-routing based on predicted winds aloft. The app also allows users information on flight plans, syncing between other FlyQ products and a 2-D and 3-D flight simulator.

The AOPA launched the FlyQ app for Android devices in August in response to member requests.

“Our iPhone and Android app, FlyQ Pocket, has been embraced by our members, with more than 60,000 downloads since its launch in April,” said Chris Ward, AOPA vice president, eMedia. “AOPA’s members asked for an even more powerful app, and now they have FlyQ EFB, which offers users the tools they need to make flight planning smarter and more convenient.”

In order to obtain the FlyQ Electronic Flight Bag, a subscription must be purchased, even for members, who are given a 30 percent discount for the app, which can be downloaded from the iTunes App Store. AOPA member price comes in at $69.99 a year, while non-member pricing is $99.99.

In another a recent announcement the general aviation community is sure to benefit from, the Aviation Supplies and Academics recently released its fifth edition of The Flight Instructor's Manual, providing "how-to" instruction guides on fundamentals of flight instruction, pre-solo instruction, first solo to the private certificate, advanced VFR instruction, introduction to aerobatic instruction and instrument instruction.

Even with improvements in safety through new tools and references, pilots should always have pilot life insurance as a backup to ensure finances are in order.
