Aviation events in September

September 10, 2012, 03:30 pm

September is undoubtedly a month to celebrate general aviation across the United States and two events will help in doing so.

The 2012 Aviation Heritage Fair scheduled for September 15 at the Kent State University Airport and will celebrate Ohio's aviation history with military and general aviation educational displays, aviation activities and historical aircraft.

The 16th annual fair is hosted by the Aeronautics Program at KSU and the Stow-Munroe Falls Kiwanis Club. According to Maureen Mcfarland, academic program director for the aeronautics program, the event has drawn 10,000 people each year.

"The goal of the Aviation Heritage Fair has been to not only share with others our love of aviation and our appreciation for alumni, the aviation industry and the local community, but also to raise funds which directly support scholarship efforts of the Aeronautics Program and the Kiwanis Club," McFarland said. "This year we are excited and proud to announce that in fall {semester of} 2013 the Aeronautics Program will be able to offer the first Aviation Heritage scholarship. This endowed scholarship is made possible through the donations of all our past and current sponsors."

Events at the fair include airplane rides, airport flyovers, contemporary and vintage aircraft, along with civilian and military planes and helicopters. Food and beverages will also be available in the carnival setting, and admission and parking are free.

Brian Udell will also be speaking at the event for the first time. Udell survived an ejection during a supersonic flight at will speak at the KIVA in the Student Center on KSU's main campus.

In addition, the National Aviation Heritage Invitational event will be held at the Reno National Championship Air Races, September 12th – 16th, 2012, in Nevada.

At the invitational, planes are judged on their authenticity and how close restoration gets to models that first left the factory. Five judges will inspect the planes down to the smallest details and winners are announced in Warbird, Classic, Antique and Large Aircraft categories, as well as the People's Choice Award.

"The vision and mission of the National Aviation Heritage Invitational is to encourage the preservation of aviation history through the restoration of vintage aircraft to original flying condition," reads the National Aviation Heritage Invitational website. "The National Aviation Heritage Invitational promotes aircraft restoration via friendly competition, bringing valuable aviation treasures together in one venue."

Pilots attending either of these events should look into pilot life insurance before taking to the skies.
