Aviation groups request extension of SMS comment period

A number of aviation interest groups have filed a request with the Federal Aviation Administration asking it to extend its comment deadline for a proposal concerning safety management systems, the groups said.
The proposal would require Part 121 holders to adopt SMS. However, the groups argue that the proposal will likely affect them in the long run, as it will set the standard for safety management systems and extend to other aviation related sectors.
The groups contend that for the proposal to achieve its goal of improving safety, it would need to consider all potential feasibility issues, which are best brought out when those affected have the opportunity to speak on the problems they believe are likely to arise.
The letter is signed by the Aircraft Electronics Association, Aviation Suppliers Association, Experimental Aircraft Association, National Air Transportation Association and the National Business Aviation Association, among other groups.
These groups requested that the comment period, which was expected to close on February 6, be extended by 90 days. Two other major General Aviation groups also contacted the FAA requesting a 60-day extension. In the end, the FAA recognized the groups' concern, but opted for a 30 day extension instead.
Though essential, safety measures are never foolproof in preventing aviation fatalities. Pilots and their families should prepare for the potential of a fatal accident by obtaining pilot insurance.
