Detroit airport to offer free internet

Detroit Metropolitan Airport recently announced it will begin offering no-cost option limited wireless internet access throughout both of its terminals. The Wayne County Airport Authority Board, which oversees the airport, approved the agreement with Boingo Wireless. The contract will allow the airport two-tiered internet access, meaning passengers can choose from an ad-supported option and premium, subscription-based internet option.
Boingo is offered in a number of airports across the world and has numerous hot spots that users who choose to purchase the premium internet option can access. Travelers who choose the ad-based internet in Detroit will view a 30-second advertisement, after which they can access the internet for 30 minutes.
The acquisition by Detroit Metro Airport represents significant network equipment upgrades that are estimated to more than triple the demand on the airport’s current wireless infrastructure.
The Manhattan City Commission recently approved a design contract and accepted a federal grant for the expansion of Manhattan Regional Airport in Kansas. The project will expand on the current terminal and is expected to cost $1.28 million. The airport handled more than 54,000 passengers in 2011 and expects an increase of 10,000 more this year.
