FAA highlights NextGen's effect on general aviation industry

The Federal Aviation Administration's Next Generation Air Transportation System will affect all forms flying, including pilots who partake in general aviation.
A recent release from the FAA noted that NextGen's Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast will probably have the earliest influence on the general aviation industry.
"Pilots will have access to improved traffic and weather information in the cockpit, which if used properly can enhance situational awareness and safety," the FAA said.
ADS-B is being integrated into the country's air system and provides a number of safety enhancements over the technology currently employed. For example, air traffic controllers will be able to get up-to-the-second information about the location of airplanes, compared to the 4.5 second updates they receive now.
The new feature has already been made available tocontrollers in the Philadelphia area. Other components of the NextGen system are being installed at airports throughout the country.
Through NextGen, the current radar-based model for flight tracking will be replaced by one that relies on satellites that use GPS systems, thereby making their readings more accurate.
