Medical certificate required for active pilots

Along with getting a license to fly, one of the essential things any pilot needs in order to take to the skies is medical clearance.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, a number of conditions could prevent a person from being able to fly a plane. Those include epilepsy, heart replacement, having a pacemaker, having a substance abuse problem, or various forms of mental illness.
However, some pilots may still be able to fly with these conditions provided that they are "adequately controlled." Medical certification will be granted as long as periodic reports are made on the pilot's medical condition.
In order to fly, pilots must be examined by an approved Aviation Medical Examiner. A list of examiners is available at the FAA's website, www.faa.gov./pilots/amelocator.
On the site, examiners can be found through a variety of search options, including by country, county, city and ZIP code. Physicians who want to be certified to provide pilot medical exams can also find information about the Medical Certification Standards and Procedures Training program, which is part of the process.
