Houston airport recently announced the start of the Houston Airport System Aviation Club to encourage young people to seek out careers in aviation and aerospace.
“Houston’s legacy as a world leader in aerospace jobs will continue with the development of this exciting and innovative community outreach to the next generation,” said Mayor Annise Parker. “By creating the spark in the minds of young people, we ensure that ‘Space City’ will continue to change the world as an economic driver in the aviation and aerospace industries.”
Mario Diaz, Houston Airport System's director, said that when he was a teenager, it was frustrating that aviation was not geared toward his age range and there were not many resource available. Houston Airport System was founded this fall and Diaz has made good on a lifelong dream to plant a seed for the future of aviators and aerospace careers.
The Houston Airport System will sponsor the Aviation Club at Sterling High School and Carnegie Vanguard High School. Aviation Club students will meet monthly for two-hour sessions and will advance their learning, enrichment and mentoring skills with various activities.
“Mario Diaz and the Houston Airport System are serving as catalysts to engage our young men and women in aviation and generate excitement toward math and science,” said Mark Friend, dean of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University central region-worldwide campus. “This is exactly what our youth need as they mature and pursue their dreams through higher education. It is what our nation needs as we strive to remain on the forefront of aviation and aerospace.”
Various other sponsors have jumped on board in support of the new club.
Lei Yu, dean and professor of the College of Science and Technology for Texas Southern University said that the university is excited to a part of the wide range of jobs that are offered in the aviation field, which are crucial to national security and the economy.
A separate event is being held November 3 at Lewis University's main campus in Romeoville, Illinois, exploring various career options that will be available at the annual Aviation Career Conference.
The event will provide career opportunities in administration, flight management, security, maintenance and air traffic control.
Those interested in attending events and expanding their aviation future should be reminded to consider pilot life insurance while doing so. General aviation is sure to prosper in the future but one can't be too careful in making sure their family's finances are line.
