February 13, 2013, 10:29 am
The annual Wings Over North Georgia Air Show is being held on October 12 to 13 at Rome's Richard B. Russell Regional Airport and company officials recently announced that the event will feature a performance from the United States Air Force Thunderbirds. “We are extraordinarily proud to have been chosen as a performance site for the Thunderbirds after our first year,” said John Cowman JLC Air Show management president . “Only a few places in the country receive this honor, and I am proud to bring this opportunity to share the Thunderbirds with the people of Atlanta, Chattanooga, North Georgia, and Northeast Alabama.” In addition to seeing the Thunderbirds' six-man team and their signature F-16 Falcons, event-goers will also be able to see the Silver Wings, the U.S. Army's parachute demonstration team. The weekend's activities will also feature the Smoke-n-Thunder Auto Show, the Aerostars Aerobatic Flight team, the U.S. Air Force Heritage Flight Team and numerous activities. The Thunderbirds are also being featured at the 2013 Sun 'n Fun International Fly-in & Expo on April 9-14 at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport in Lakeland, Florida. The military jet team began on June 1, 1953 and has not stopped performing for crowds since then. Even though they are scheduled to entertain, if necessary, the team and the aircraft can be called to fight at a moment's notice. The planes can be flown to Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada and because the aircraft are only slightly modified, they can be made combat ready in less than 72 hours. Winter Icebreaker Social
Those who can't wait for the Wings Over North Georgia and SUN 'n FUN air shows have a chance to attend the Aero Club of New England's Winter Icebreaker Social at the Papa Razzi restaurant in Burlington, Massachusetts on February 20. "This wonderful evening at the Papa Razzi in Burlington will provide you with the chance to enjoy some great food and fantastic company," reads the Aero Club website. "Our special guest speaker is Garry Kozak, a world renowned salvage expert, who will give his presentation on the last flying Sikorsky S-39 Amphibian." Garry Kozak will give a presentation on how he helped salvage the Sikorsky S-39 Amphibian, which was lost in a remote Alaskan lake nearly 55 years ago. The event costs $25 per person, and those who are interested need to make reservations by February 17. Those making plans to attend any upcoming air shows are reminded to never fly without pilot life insurance.
