A group of young people from Milwaukee recently had the opportunity to learn more about the career opportunities that could await them in the aviation industry.
According to AirTran Airways, more than a dozen students from the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee's Young Leaders Academy participated in the first Aviation Career Education Academy. The program concluded with a commencement at the Discovery World Museum.
"We are excited to bring this unique educational opportunity to a group of wonderful students in Milwaukee," said Loral Blinde, senior vice president of human resources and administration for AirTran Airways. "Kids are a core focus of AirTran Airways' corporate giving in Milwaukee and other communities we serve. And who knows, we may very well be training the next generation of AirTran pilots for our new Milwaukee hub."
Participants in the program were able to use a Boeing 717 full-motion simulator while also touring North America's tallest air trafficcontrol tower - which is located at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
People who are interested in pursuing a career in the aviation industry can often get started by taking classes toward getting a pilot's license.
