NBAA speaks out against Washington aircraft tax proposal

When the National Business Aviation Administration successfully spoke out against a Washington state proposed bill that would have added an excise tax to aircraft in the state, they may have thought the bill had been defeated for good. However, the excise tax suggestion has risen again, this time in a new bill, the NBAA says.
On April 14, House Bill 2089 was introduced into the Ways and Means Committee. The bill would add an annual 1 percent excise tax on the taxable value of all aircraft based in Washington state, according to the group.
"Business and General Aviation are vital to Washington State, accounting for over $3 billion in total economic impact and providing nearly 8,000 jobs," the NBAA said in a statement. The group has started a No Plane No Gain campaign to educate the community on the important impact general aviation has in the state. It has also encouraged its members to speak to local legislators and encourage them to defeat the proposal.
Pilots already face a number of expenses that are related to important issues, such as maintaining their aircrafts, investing in safety training and devices, and protecting themselves and their family members by obtaining pilot life insurance. As such, the aviation community is often opposed to proposals that may add unnecessary expenses to their finances.
