The Federal Aviation Administration has released a flight advisory, warning airmen that GPS signals over Wendover, Utah could potentially be unreliable or unavailable between April 28 and May 13.
"During testing, the GPS signal may be unreliable or unavailable within a 395NMR centered at 402602N/1132936W or the BVL VOR 145.44 degree radial at 21.3NM at FL400 and above, decreasing in area with decrease in altitude to 355NMR at FL250, 260NMR at 10,000 FT MSL, 265NMR at 4,000 FT AGL and 225NMR at 50 FT AGL," the warning reads.
The FAA advises pilots to report any issues they experience in order for them to determine the true extent of the interruption while the testing is taking place. The group also encourages pilots to check back regularly for changes to the notice.
Aviation is becoming increasingly dependent on GPS for a number of essential features, including those that contribute to pilot safety. Errors or interruptions in GPS could potentially contribute to fatal accidents. As NextGen develops and GPS-based systems become the baseline for pilot navigation, it may be important to have pilot life insurance coverage, should something go wrong during a flight.
