AOPA pairs with Life Line to offer health screenings for pilots

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association has partnered with Life Line Screening to offer discounted health screenings to pilots that are members of the organization, the company announced.
Life Line Screening is a company that uses ultra-sound technology to find potential sources of health problems before they develop further. These include plaque buildup in arteries, atrial fibrillation and osteoporosis
The screenings may also help identify preventative health problems, such as strokes, which require two years time for recovery before the FAA will reissue medical approval for pilot certificates, according to the source.
"Maintaining good health is important to everyone, but it is especially critical for pilots, and the significant role preventive care plays in warding off medical issues can't be ignored," the AOPA said.
Pilots who experience a health crisis while sitting in the cockpit could potentially wind up in a fatal accident. In July 2010, a California pilot was in a fatal accident after reporting that he was experiencing a heart attack, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The potential for situations like this underline the importance of life insurance for pilots, which can assist their families financially should they perish during a flight.
