DOT emphasizes commitment to safety

The U.S. Department of Transportation oversees all forms of travel and associated safety regulations. The department's secretary, Ray LaHood, says it is committed to safety and its recent work shows that.
LaHood recently announced that the DOT has already fulfilled more recommendations this year by the National Traffic Safety Board than in the past five years combined. To date, more than 90 recommendations have bee completed this year, while only 60 were fulfilled last year and in 2008.
One way the DOT has made aviation safer for pilots and passengers is through implementing pilot fatigue regulations. LaHood and Federal Aviation Administrator Randy Babbitt cited pilot fatigue as one of the main priorities they wished to address.
The DOT is also looking to combat operator fatigue in motorists across all transportation sectors.
Transportation operators who are fatigued are more likely to make mistakes and potentially harm themselves or others in the process. Operating equipment while tired is never a good idea. Getting a full night's rest can help keep pilots and other vehicle operators alert and safe.
