Planes nearly collide by Minneapolis airport

September 24, 2010, 02:52 pm

It's important for pilots to always keep safety in mind while they are in the air, similar to how a car driver always needs to keep their eyes on the road. Eliminating undue distractions can help pilots and their passengers stay safe as well.

Even the best pilot, however, can meet trouble in the sky. Earlier this month, a commercial jetliner and a small cargo airplane nearly collided in Minneapolis.

The near collision is currently under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board. The carrier was taking 90 passengers and five crew members and the cargo plane was not carrying passengers or crew members besides the pilot. Reportedly neither pilot saw one another because of clouds.

The NTSB and FAA started investigating the incident shortly after the incident took place and are continuing to look into the situation.

While fortunately no one was hurt in the near-collision, the incident does serve as a reminder that circumstances can change in an instant whileflying. Pilots should always follow safety precautions to help lessen the likelihood of an accident. It may also be wise for pilots to invest in life insurance in case the unthinkable occurs.
