Safety is a major concern for the Federal Aviation Administration and they are using this week's festivities at Oshkosh, Wisconsin as a platform for the cause.
Just over 300 people were involved in fatal general aviation accidents as of June of this year, a decline of 8 percent over last fiscal year, says the FAA. While the overall decline in deaths is promising, further improvement is still needed.
There has been an increase in the number of accidents involving amateur-built aircraft. A quarter of all general aviation fatalities result from the use of such aircraft.
On a positive note, fatalities resulting from inclement weather have dropped almost 40 percent during the past three years. Such a large decline may have have resulted from a combination of factors, including increased education and better safety and GPS devices.
Garmin, for example, recently released a new app for iPhone users which offers weather data, fuel prices and flight planning assistance. A number of other companies have also begun to create easy-to-use programs designed to aid pilots and increase safety while in the cockpit.
