Thousands of aircraft and aviation enthusiasts are gathering this week in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. For many, the experience at the Experimental Aircraft Association-sponsored event is memorable because of all the fun visitors have.
For Karen Bock, however, this week brings back anything but happy memories.
USA Today reports that two years ago, Roger Bock eagerly attended the EAA event with his "home-built" plane. Tragedy struck when Bock and his co-pilot John Linden's plane went too slow before hitting the ground, killing both.
"I think Oshkosh is very dangerous," Karen Bock told the paper. "I really think that if he had been landing anywhere else, he would not have crashed."
Given the large number of aircraft operating during the aviation show, as many as three planes land at the same time using the same runway, according to the paper. The crowded runways may be just one factor contributing to accidents at the airshow.
The paper says thatthere has been at least one death affiliated with the show each year since 2000. Pilots who are planning on attending the show should be extra diligent to avoid a similar outcome.
Aircraft pilots and flight engineers are two careers that have a high number of work-related fatalities every year, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics.
