Government finds substantial issues at general aviation airports

After a review of 13 airports across the country, the Government Accountability Office has determined that there is a lack of security at several of these locations. This problem could possibly be endangering the lives of Americans and increase the amount of pilots life insurance claims, according to the GAO's report to the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation of the US Senate.
The investigators have suggested the Transportation Security Administration work with the airports identified in order to prevent terrorist attacks and other aviation related crimes, Homeland Security Today reports.
The inspections found that 10 of the 13 airports reviewed did not adopt recommended security measures in full, as they operate under voluntary guidelines. The three airports that were in complete compliance with the recommendations were incorporated with a commercial airport.
The report showed that most of the airports had a fence around the perimeter or some other form of natural barrier. However, at six of the facilities this barrier was obstructed, which could allow an individual to climb the fence unnoticed. Also, all of the 10 problematic airports did not have lighting along these perimeters.
