National Transportation Safety Board turns attention to general aviation

The NTSB highlighted the fact that 450 people died in general aviation crashes last year, possibly causing pilots life insurance prices to rise. The fact that GA has the highest accident rate of any sector in aviation, six times higher than small commuter and air taxi operators, seemed to mark cause for concern from the board. The causes of these accidents are almost always a repeat of previous circumstances, the board found.
The general aviation industry may be able to cut down the rate of fatalities by making improvements to aircraft, changing the flying environment and improving pilot performance, according to the NTSB.
The implementation of better occupant protection and working emergency locator beacons may also help boost survival rates. However, if the pilot is not trained properly no amount of security measures will protect them against the elements.
Training pilots about the capabilities and possible malfunctions of aircraft technology may be able to reduce the risk of accidents. If something goes wrong mid-flight and the pilot does not know how to handle the issue the result could be deadly.
