The Illinois Department of Transportation recently recognized a number of airports with awards because of the high level of service they have provided. Included in those fields were a number general aviation airports. Those were: Lake in the Hills Airports, which received the Reliever of the Year award; Quincy Regional Baldwin Field, General Aviation - Category A Airport of the Year; and Mt. Carmel Municipal Airport, General Aviation - Category B Airport of the Year. Illinois Transportation Secretary Gary Hannig said that these three airports - along with the seven others that were recognized - showed a commitment to providing safe and comfortable service to travelers in the state. "These airports set the bar for excellence and we are happy to partner with them to continue to advance aviation and further safe and efficient air travel throughout Illinois," Hannig said. There has been a general push across the country to highlight the importance that smaller general aviation airports carry for the nation's economy. For example, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association's general aviation campaign features celebrity spokesmen Harrison Ford and Morgan Freeman.
