New safety program launched by pilots and air traffic controllers

A new safety initiative is being rolled out by the Federal Aviation Administration. The data-sharing program will allow pilots and air traffic controllers to self-report safety information.
Information from the Aviation Safety Action Program and the Air Traffic Safety Action Program will be combined to help aid in decision making.
Currently, United Airlines is the first carrier to have pilots use the system. It's anticipated that other airlines will begin using the data-sharing program as well. Entering safety data that may prevent future accidents is voluntary for aviation workers.
FAA administrator Randy Babbitt says integrating information from both programs will help aid pilots and air traffic controllers.
"This revolutionary program will give us an incredible amount of data that will help us find problems, make corrections and avoid incidents," says Babbitt. "I applaud air traffic controllers, pilots and airlines for their dedication to keeping our aviation system as safe as possible."
There have been more than 800 general aviation accidents and 36 carrier accidents so far this year, according to data from the National Transportation Safety Board.
