Not all plane crashes happen in the air

During the International Civil Aviation Organization's Global Runway Symposium last month, it became abundantly clear to experts that something needs to be done about the number of accidents taking place while planes were still on the ground, according to TIME.
"We need to tap the experience and expertise of all segments of the world aviation community, to come up with the best solutions," Nancy Graham, director of IACO's Air Navigation Bureau, told the Montreal Gazette.
Experts believe that runway accidents are the number one killer in aviation today, causing an increase in pilots life insurance claims, according to the news source. Many of these accidents are the result of pilot error or poorly designed runways.
As flight traffic is projected to grow by 70 percent over the next decade, officials feel that this is a major issue that must be contained sooner rather than later. There are usually multiple moving parts involved in an aviation accident, the Gazette reports. Graham believes this further exacerbates the need for airports, airlines, plane-makers, navigation service providers and pilots to work more closely together.
