Pilots should check tires for safety

Most motorists have heard numerous times about the importance of checking their tires' air pressure and traction to ensure their safety. It's important for pilots, too, to ensure their vehicle is properly maintained. While propellers need to be in working order, good tires are needed to safely take-off and land.
Good Year Aviation is reminding pilots that airplane maintenance follows a different schedule than automobiles. A professional should be consulted and research conducted if one is not sure on the appropriate time frame for checking equipment.
Robert Robson, a product support manager with Good Year Aviation, says tires with too much air can wear out unevenly.
"Aircraft tire pressure should never be taken for granted," says Robson. "High pressures, high loads, and the different designs of aircraft tires and wheels often cause assemblies to lose pressure faster than those for cars."
Something as simple as improper tire pressure could result in problems for a pilot. Even a seemingly minor accident can be serious. Pilot life insurance is available to those who wish to protect their loved ones in the event a mishap in the sky turns fatal.
