Experienced pilot's crash highlights need for safety standards

A pilot with many flights under his belt fell victim to a fatal crash while trying to land at Fitchburg Municipal Airport in Massachusetts earlier this month. Now, some are pointing to safety standards that need to be implemented in order to prevent more accidents from taking place.
The Worcester Telegram and Gazette reports that an investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration revealed that between 1994 and 2004, the Fitchburg airport had more fatalities than any other airport in the region.
The paper reports the airport's manager, Fred Guertin, says lengthening and moving the runway will make the airport safer.
"The new runway will pretty much be aligned with the riverbed," Guertin told the paper. "The approach is safer. If there was a crash, it would be into the river rather than people's homes. It gets airplanes away from neighborhoods."
While there are some conditions that may arise that are completely out of a pilot's control. However, whenever possible, risks should be reduced by following proper procedures. Life insurance for pilots is also a good idea even for those with years of experience.
