Pilots take stance against security scanners

November 11, 2010, 04:36 pm

The use of full body scanners at airports has caused a lot of controversy among passengers and security officials. Now, pilots are voicing their opposition to the measure as well.

Seattle news station KOMO reports that president of the Allied Pilots Association, David Bates, is urging pilots to steer away from the scanners.

"The cumulative effect of additional radiation exposure, coupled with what we do with flying an aircraft over a 10-20 year career begins to mount up," said Bates, according to the station.

Orlando International Airport is one of many facilities that uses the full-body scanners. Radio station WDBO says the screening device has met some controversy. On the one hand, the report some feel the screening measure is far too intrusive. However, the Transportation Security Administration asserts the piece of equipment does not pose a health hazard and increases safety.

Concerns over terrorists and other illegal activity tend to cause a spike in security measures. It may be wise to buy term life insurance for pilots while they are actively flying aircraft on a regular basis. With Thanksgiving ushering in the busiest travel time of the year, many passengers and pilots stand to be exposed to the full-body scan.
