Poor record-keeping puts flight school on FAA's radar

A flight school is under fire for its poor record-keeping and training practices, reports AVStop.com. The Federal Aviation Administration wants to give the Flying Vikings school in Hayward, California, a $221,650 penalty.
According to the website, the FAA says multiple instructors were lacking appropriate training during most of 2008. Such requirements must be met in order for a school to be considered FAA-certified.
FAA administrator Randy Babbitt says he believes flight schools play an important role in safety.
"Good solid basic training and accurate pilot records are the foundation for pilots to operate safely throughout their flying careers," says Babbitt. "We expect flight schools to help provide that solid safety foundation."
In addition to receiving proper training through a reputable program, obtaining life insurance for pilots and following all established safety checks before takeoff are crucial for a good flight.
Failure to follow established rules can result in an unfavorable outcome. Ignoring severe fog warnings, for example, could lead to a pilot trying to land in an area that is not easily visible.
