Radar system finally coming to Utah airport

Perseverance is key to accomplishing many things in life. Former Provo, Utah mayor Lewis Billings can certainly attest to that.
After 11 years of lobbying for radar equipment at Provo Municipal Airport, Billings' wish has finally been granted, reports the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.
The project is expected to cost $4 million, half of which the Federal Aviation Administration has agreed to foot.
"When there's limited money to pay for a lot of projects needed at airports nationwide, not everything's going to get approved and funded," AOPA cites Billings as saying. "We were told 'No' on more than one occasion. But when a serious need exists, and the right team of people responds to the FAA with a polite, 'We really need to keep discussing this radar,' good things happen."
The Salt Lake Tribune notes that the equipment will enhance safety. Kathryn Vernon of the FAA is cited by the paper as saying that air-traffic controllers will have an easier time doing their job if they are able to see the planes. Controllers will be better-equipped to guide pilots in landing, especially in poor weather conditions.
