Flying into Kentucky's Blue Grass Airport just got a bit safer for pilots and their passengers. The airport just revealed a new 4,000 foot runway for private and corporate aircraft.
Many officials were on hand for the unveiling, including Governor Steve Beshear and Federal Aviation Administration administrator Doug Martin.
"Not only will this new runway enhance aircraft safety at Blue Grass Airport, it will also benefit our state's economic development efforts," said Beshear. "Improvements that enhance the safety and efficiency of air travel for business purposes are an important part of supporting our state's economic development efforts."
Airport officials say that the new runway is a more efficient use of land and will provide increased safety during crosswind conditions.
The Aviation Owners and Pilots Association says that learning to land in crosswind conditions can be trickiest skill to hone. They note that, unfortunately, crosswinds are a fact offlying, but practice can help pilots handle the conditions better.
Funding for the $27 million runway came from the Federal Aviation Administration, Kentucky Department of Aviation and the Blue Grass Airport.
