In recent months, there have been a number of close-calls in aviation. One such incident was the near-accident in March involving a Southwest Airlines jet and a private plane that flew dangerously close to one another.
According to the Dallas Morning News, the incident occurred when an air traffic controller in Orlando asked the airliner to check on a nearby Cirrus SR22 that had not been responding to radio calls from the ATC center. However, while trying to see if the smaller aircraft was OK, the airliner came within potentially dangerous proximity to the private jet.
A recent update from the National Transportation Safety Board has revealed just how close the two aircraft came to a collision. According to the NTSB's preliminary factual report on the event, the two planes came within 100 feet of each other. The distance is far smaller than the minimum separation of three miles mandated by the Federal Aviation administration.
Pilots face a great risk of fatal accidents that can be difficult to prepare for. Having pilot life insurance coverage is a solution to having a back-up plan, should an aviator perish while in flight.
