Aeorspacecompany to hold educators camp

July 12, 2010, 06:14 pm

Boeing is sponsoring a week-long educators space camp this month to help teachers come up with new ways to present math and science to their students.

Experts will be leading workshops and seminars that include simulated space missions, astronaut training, and presentations.

Boeing hopes that such exercises will help teachers bring hands-on engineering skills into the classroom and ultimately increase the number of students pursuing higher education degrees in technology, math and science.

"Space Camp provides a hands-on learning environment where the excitement of science, math and technology are explored and practiced through the mysteries and wonders of space," says director of Education at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, Ruth Oliver.

Over 100 applicants from around the world will reap the benefits from the program. Boeing will follow up with participants to see if the program is meeting its objectives.

Efforts to increase interest and ultimately enrollment in science and engineering fields may already be paying off. Research from the National Center for Education Statistics shows that the number of engineering degrees conferred jumped 12 percent between 1998 and 2008. Boeing began offering educational programs to teachers in 1992.ADNFCR-3158-ID-19885846-ADNFCR
