Reading and flying came together during U.S. Airways' "Fly with Us. Read with Kids" campaign. The airline teamed up with Reading is Fundamental to encourage parents to read to children. From September through the end of October of this year, more than 5,500 people participated in the program. The program's initial goal was to complete 10 million minutes of reading, but that benchmark was surpassed with more than 16 million minutes completed. RIF president and CEO Carol Rasco says children reap many benefits from being read to. "The Read with Kids Challenge engages families and communities to help children become lifelong readers. I am delighted that more than 16 million minutes were logged in just two months, and I encourage families and communities to continue reading with kids on a regular basis," says Rasco. Reading to children is important to help them learn valuable language skills, experts say. The more children read and are read to, the easier the skill becomes for them. Engaging children with books may help encourage them to do well in school.
