Making flying safe is a goal for everyone, but achieving the milestone can be a challenge. The Alaska Dispatch says the Alaska Aviation Coordination Council recently met with other leaders in the industry to establish a road map for future goals.
Among the areas that were discussed included: airports, airspace along with research and development, the paper says.
According to the news source, the groups believe refining its goals for the upcoming five years will hep increase safety.
University of Alaska-Anchorage aviation technology assistant director Leonard Kirk says education was also discussed at the meeting.
"We need to address what will become the biggest pilot shortage we have ever experienced due to new FAA flight hour work rules and pilots retiring out of the system," says Kirk.
In addition to safety regulations and protective legislation, it's important for pilots to take some measures and responsibility into their own hands. Plane owners should always make sure to follow a regular maintenance schedule for their aircraft. It's also important to purchase pilot insurance to provide coverage should something go wrong during a flight.
