Mireille Goyer, a pilot from Tswassen, British Columbia, was recently recognized by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, receiving the 2011 Let's Go Flying Award for her work on the Women of Aviation Worldwide Week initiative. Goyer, the driving force behind the week that celebrated women in aviation, introduced some 700 women to the world of aviation, according to the Delta Optimist.
The AOPA award, given annually, acknowledges a group or individual who exemplifies the spirit of general aviation by driving interest in becoming a pilot. Goyer's event commemorated the 100th anniversary of women's pilot licensure.
"I was truly honored to be selected to receive this award and especially pleased to be the first woman to do so," Goyer told the source.
Craig Fuller, president of the AOPA, noted that in the United States, women account for just 6 percent of the pilot population. He praised Goyer's efforts to encourage women to enter the field.
Many general aviation pilots consider pilot insurance policies because the nature of their work is so unique. Pilots assume a specific body of risks when they take to the air, and a life in aviation comes with certain financial responsibilities that most average civilians don't need to consider.
