Officials in Pennsylvania weigh airport improvement

Officials began drafting a comprehensive report on the local economic impact of the Business Airport of Carlisle, located in South Middleton Township, Pennsylvania. The regional airport stands as the only paved airfield in the area.Officials hope the report will maintain the airport's positive economic impact on the community while shedding light on potential areas of expansion, according to the Cumberlink Sentinel.
Currently, the airport has 60 aircraft based at the field, most of which are single-engine airplanes, and handles 67 flights daily. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the airport has an annual payroll of $1.9 million.
Officials note that the study will be an ongoing process, and no long-term determinations will be made based on initial findings. They stated that the relative instability in the economy may make beneficial expansions difficult. Additionally, some opportunities for growth may not be apparent in a preliminary report because of the recession.
"With government funding at this point, there are a lot of uncertainties," Omar Shute, executive director of the Cumberland Area Economic Development Corporation, told the source. "You never know what the federal government will decide to do and how the funding levels could change."
Many independent pilots who operate out of regional airports belong to pilot groups or associations, which can offer discounted rates on pilot insurance programs.
