Aviation classes scheduled for the summer

Outreach Aviation in Lanham, Maryland, is planning to offer free flying and mechanic lessons to students interested in aviation from underserved communities this summer. The goal of the program is to increase awareness and interest in the aviation field while reaching out to at-risk youths at risk.
Founders Wayne Tonkins and Jonathan Neal are certified flight instructors looking to help high school students learn the necessary hands-on skills needed to become a pilot or airplane mechanic, including excellence in math and science coursework. The program first started with 20 to 30 students in 2011, but has expanded in the last year. The program gives students first-hand experience with the machinery, flying lessons, and tutoring options to help them perform better in science and math courses at school, the Maryland Gazette reported.
Aviation information will also be available to students and enthusiasts at the 2012 Aviation Geek Fest later this month. Sponsored by the Future of Flight, Boeing and AirlineReporter, the event feature keynote speakers, hands-on projects and guest appearances. Visitors will be able to tour a Boeing factory floor and visit a Dreamliner Gallery to see the aircrafts up close, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported.
As aviation enthusiasts are learning about the industry and machinery, they should also learn about the value of pilot insurance to protect against the unexpected.
