Major players in the aviation industry are investigating ways to make aircraft emissions less harmful to the environment.
The combined efforts of GE Aviation, the Farnborough International Airshow, LFV Sweden, Swedavia, SAS Scandinavian Airlines and Rockwell-Collins will be conducting the research.
The Atlantic-Interoperability Initiative to Reduce Emissions Green Connections project is a 10-month long project slated to commence later this year.
Most of the previous studies conducted in the area centered on reducing mileage, but new work in the AIRE Green Connections project aims to reduce pollution while departing.
"The Green Connection project is a great example of public-private partnership in practice," said chief environment and economist at SESAR Joint Undertaking Alain Siebert. "We expect it to play a pivotal role in demonstrating that by leveraging present aircraft capabilities, green results can be achieved today in all phases of flight. That is a win-win project for all stakeholders."
Even though airlines are responsible for between 2 percent and 3 percent of CO2 emissions, according to the International Congress and Convention Association. Reducing the amount of pollution emitted from aircraft could have a substantial effect on the environment.
