There is a body of evidence that shows there is a gender gap between boys and girls and their choice of careers in math and science-related fields.
The aviation industry is one in which women are underrepresented. However, this summer the doors were open to only girls at an aviation camp at North Carolina's Elizabeth City State University, reports the Daily Advance newspaper.
The all-girls camp for high school students aimed to make a lasting impression on a group of young girls. ECSU aviation science program director Anthony Sharp believes that his camp has been successful.
"Women don't have a lot of visibility in a lot of careers in aviation," Sharp told the Daily Advance. "Secondly, we thought this would be a great opportunity for these young girls to meet with professional women in aviation."
The exposure to the aviation industry has sparked some of the girls' interest into obtaining a pilot's license and to learn more about space, says the Daily Advance.
Research from Western Michigan University reveals that only 6 percent of pilots are women, clearly showing the disparity between genders and participation in aviation.
