Aviation industry showing growth in Tennessee

The Metro Nashville Airport Authority recently announced that smaller airports in middle Tennessee are reporting growth, specifically a rise in fuel sales. The authority attributes much of this growth to student pilots that use the airports for their training.
The general aviation industry took a hit in 2008 and 2009 when the overall economy started its downturn, Nashville Public Radio reported. However, aviation and charters have reported growth recently, with more businessmen taking quick trips on smaller planes because some commercial airlines have limited flight options for certain cities.
In addition, the source reported some smaller airports are selling more fuel to private companies and students. In an interview with the source, Randy Harmon from the John C. Tune Airport said the facility sold more fuel in the fall of 2011 that reflected numbers not seen since 2007.
Further, the International Air Transport Association expects the U.S. aviation industry to generate $2 billion in profits in 2011, and $2.9 billion in 2012. These predictions are based on the industry posting higher than expected consumer retailing numbers at the end of 2011. The fastest growth is expected to have occurred in the fourth quarter of 2011 and carry into 2012.
