Aviation school leaves Maine campus

The economy has been attributed to fewer jobs for aviation industry professionals and may be one of the reasons behind Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University abandoning its campus in Brunswick, Maine.
The Times Record says approximately 100 military members took part in the school's offering on the Brunswick Naval Air Station base in 2008 and there were plans to grow the campus to 2,500 students. Initially, the university announced it would be staying in the area after the Navy left, reports the paper, which would have provided the talent necessary for the base's chances of success.
Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority executive director Steve Levesque told the paper that plans to expand the school had to come to a halt.
"They had a small operation here and we were hoping they would grow that," said Levesque. "But the recession came and aviation took a big hit."
The costs associated with operating an aviation program caused The University of Illinois and St. Cloud State University to announce plans to end their respective aviation degree offerings earlier this year. However, Lakeland College in Wisconsin recently announced plans to establish an aviation program.
