Pilots could find themselves landing at a new airport in Illinois if all goes according to plan, says Governor Pat Quinn.
The Illinois Department of Transportation has submitted all necessary paperwork for the South Suburban Airport. the report includes information sheds light on the facilities needed to effectively operate for the first five years. If completed, the facility would span over more than 5,300 acres including a runway of 9,500 feet.
Quinn says there would be several benefits to opening a new airport in the state. Furthermore, there is a hope for the airport to grow in the future.
"We are one step closer to the South Suburban Airport becoming reality,” says Quinn. "This is an important project that will create jobs in the area, and make this region a major air transportation hub."
An airport can help support many industries and jobs. Most facilities can help support a number of eateries and hotels.
Several governors from states nationwide have dedicated specific weeks or months to highlight the importance aviation plays. Such states include North Carolina, Minnesota, Tennessee and West Virginia.
